I’m Rick Darcy, creator of The Harrowing Adventures of Desperate Otto. The story began with an unexpected moment of inspiration, a friend who simply needed to hear a story, and gradually grew into a lively Western world of bold dreams, risky choices, and unlikely friendships.
Through Otto, Tag-Along Hank, and the unusual characters they meet, I bring together humor, action, and heart. My aim is to give readers an entertaining escape where one questionable plan can become the beginning of an unforgettable tale.
Otto is a tall, strong, fiercely determined outlaw who dreams of becoming rich and famous. Although he becomes a bank robber, his character is more complicated than his fearsome reputation suggests. Beneath his rugged exterior is a man capable of kindness, loyalty, and compassion—especially when someone is in trouble. As the leader of the Desperados, Otto is the planner and driving force behind their adventures.
Hank may look like an unlikely outlaw—short, pudgy, shaggy, and usually mumbling to himself—but there is much more to him than meets the eye. He is clever, observant, and full of ideas. His BIG Idea helps Otto find bigger opportunities, while his quick thinking and surprising courage repeatedly help the Desperados escape danger. Hank also becomes Otto's trusted partner, with their relationship built on loyalty and trust.
Sheriff Smiley Pete is a towering and imposing lawman who takes his duty seriously. Despite his intimidating size and strength, he is described as kind and gentle—until it is time to bring outlaws to justice. With his BIG BAD Posse at his side, Smiley Pete relentlessly pursues Otto and Hank across the Wild, Wild West. His determination makes him the Desperados' most persistent adversary.
Sue is a young girl who escapes a harsh orphanage and unexpectedly crosses paths with Otto and Hank. Though she is small and young, Sue is courageous, loyal, resourceful, and remarkably quick-thinking. She refuses to betray the two men who showed her kindness and soon proves that she can think just as boldly as Hank. Her ideas and bravery become crucial to helping the Desperados escape Sheriff Smiley Pete and ultimately find their way to safety.
The Headmaster is the cruel and calculating figure who runs the orphanage where Sue lives. He forces the children to work, withholds food, and punishes them when they complain or fail to meet his demands. Unlike the Desperados, who unexpectedly show Sue compassion, the Headmaster uses fear and control. He becomes a direct enemy of Sue and the Desperados, pursuing them because he wants to recapture Sue and see the outlaws caught.
